Artist Statement

“Encaustic is the process of painting with hot, liquid wax mixed with dry coloured pigments. This technique is exhilarating for an impatient painter like me. Over the years, it has completely changed my way of seeing and thinking. As I shape the wax, the wax has shaped me to be the artist I am today. It has a mind of its own and I love that daily duel in the studio.”

Moving to Alberta in 2002 from Eastern Canada has had a tremendous impact on Bigoudi's life and her artistic practice. Since 2004, she has had 12 solo exhibitions in Alberta, participated in more than 20 juried group shows across Canada and was awarded two Public Art Commission by the Town of Canmore. Most recently she has participated in three different residencies at the Banff Centre, and in June of 2015, she will participate in a residency on Fogo Island, Newfoundland.

Bigoudi Description

Bigoudi has two major sources of inspiration: domesticated animals and the human figure.

In her animal paintings, Bigoudi’s work illustrates just how similar the psychology and posturing can be between ourselves and the domesticated creatures we so heavily rely upon. Whether she finds herself in a developing country or just on the road outside of her home in Canmore, she is always amazed by the lasting impression horses, cows and other animals leave on her. She is always eager to transfer that impression to her paintings, using strong composition, colours and light to put emphasis on a characteristic of a given animal.

The human figure is also a major source of inspiration to Bigoudi. Over the years, she has worked with different models and has always preferred the ones she knows personally, like her muse who has been a friend for more than 15 years. That way, she can show the physiology and psychology of a model, and explore themes like friendship, honesty and confidence. The viewers often find themselves fascinated by the expression of the model in a way they never felt before, as though the model was their friend too…

Bigoudi works and lives in Canmore, AB and her work can be found in private collections in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia.

Bigoudi has had a painting practice since 2001 and she studied the Fine Arts at Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf and Université du Québec à Montréal, graphic design at Cégep de Maisonneuve and encaustic painting with fellow Alberta artist Terry Posiniak.
