Artist's Statement

The way we interact with our environment influences the way we see things and frame the things we see. We take insubstantial, fragmented images and fill them out to make complete narratives.

It is this tension between the negative space, what is withheld from the frame of the painting and what is suggested that engages the viewer in a conversation with my work. I am showing part of a picture or world which exists beyond the realm of the canvas in the mind of the viewer. This conversation between the viewer and the painting, between description and abstraction is the most vital element of my painting.

Kim Atlin Biography

Raised in rural Ontario, I moved to Toronto to attend the Ontario College of Art and Design and stayed. Toronto has remained my base although my fascination with the colours and textures of the world has kept me and my brush wandering.

I took part in my first exhibition shortly before graduation from OCAD in 1988. Since then I have been a frequent exhibitor in group shows in Toronto Ontario, ST. Johns New Brunswick, New York City, Palm Desert California as well as numerous other locations. My most recent solo shows have taken place at Oeno Gallery and Parts Gallery.
My work is found in the Ontario Government’s Collection, OCAD printmaking collection, Ontario Archives, National Archives and Canada’s Icelandic Embassy.

My paintings are also held in numerous private and corporate collections throughout Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Chile, Iceland and New Zealand.
