Audrey Mabee
Audrey Mabee's whimsical yet unexpectedly contemplative work is the culmination of a career spent experimenting with colour and delving into a world of memories and forgotten secrets.
With intent, Mabee's pieces contain small, unanticipated twists with almost always, some element ever so slightly off kilter. A lively colour palette and appreciation for implied texture create an impression of lightheartedness that is juxtaposed with an unexpected, incredibly subtle undertone of melancholy.
Mabee's figurative paintings emanate from the artist's ever evolving repertoire of creative experiences, developing mid process rather than as concrete premeditated imagery. Influenced by great modern masters and consistently intrigued by negative space, Mabee selects subject matter and colour to spark elation and joy but also to inspire mindful examination.
Mabee's work, a fine balance between logical, geometric shape and organic line, invites the viewer to examine a full range of emotions and to consider an internal analysis of space, form and mood.

After years of experimentation with colour and space, stirred memories and forgotten secrets, my work keeps evolving. The experiments go on, the learning continues, the style moves on.
The paintings, oil on canvas, are usually figurative....people enjoying life, pursuing their passions. The image develops out of the process, and is not fully conceived at the outset. The multiple changes each canvas is subjected to during that process is the challenge, joy and often a surprise for me. I am intrigued by the negative spaces.
My work has been influenced primarily by artists like Modigliani, with a unique drawing style. The strong colours of Hundertwasser and Matisse, the fantasies of Chagall and the exquisite patterns of Klimt have also been a major influence for me. The subjects and colours I use are chosen to make you feel good and smile when you first look at my work….if you find something in them that also makes you think and wonder, all the better.
