About The Artist
Jessamyn BoxBorn in Edmonton Alberta, Calgary based artist Jessamyn Box uses acrylic paint, marker, crayon, charcoal, ink and spray paint to create large, abstract works of art that are grounded in colour and explore the relationship and territory between objects and form. Her work is a multifarious, dynamic fairy tale that forces the journey’s plot and resolution into the eye of the viewer.
As a primarily self-taught painter, Box began her artistic journey at a young age with drumming and drama as her creative outlets. After studying Theatre Arts in college, Box found she was desperately craving colour and wanting to get her hands dirty, so she began experimenting with paint whenever possible. Box now has artwork in personal and corporate collections around Canada and the United States.

Jessamyn is not only an accomplished painter but also a level 4 sommelier. She completed the prestigious Wine Spirit Education Trust (W.S.E.T.), Level 4 Diploma in 2016, and then performed sommelier duties in a succession of top Vancouver restaurants, all the while advancing her dynamic and lively canvases. We are thrilled to have her back in Calgary, where she is now part of the fabulous team at J Webb, conducting tastings and sharing wine wisdom as well as working at Calgary's Major Tom restaurant as one of its esteemed sommeliers.
On Friday, May 12, Jessamyn will lead us on a curated adventure: pairing fine wines with fine art with not only her artwork but also the art of Susana Espinoza and Maria Munar!
Bright colours evoke joy, the shapes and textures come alive on the canvas, and like oxygen, bring clarity and focus to each waking moment. In her work, there is no visual beginning or ending, no right side up or upside down. Instead, the images float on the canvas; shapes exist independently, yet they are as one within the overarching story.

About The Artist
Susana EspinozaSusana Neumann Ringeling was born in Valparaiso Chile, 1954. She graduated from Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaiso Chile in 1976 and married Jose Espinoza. They then emigrated to Canada together that same year.
In her work, Susana pushes color pigments to near perfection by relying on her intuitive knowledge of color along with a complete application of mediums and supports. She describes the outcome as “Floating color”, which is created through tireless experimentation with depth of surface. The colour pigments are suspended in a fluid medium, then meticulously superimposed one layer upon another. The result is gem-like transparency and reflectivity.
In contrast, Susana also produces a textural series that she describes as “raw and tactile”. The heavy texture in these paintings achieves lightness and depth by the way it is build; opaque versus transparent, static versus floating layers.

Susana Espinoza’s invigorating exploration of colour transforms geometric and intermittent organic elements into meticulously structured, dynamic visual spectacles.

About The Artist
Maria MunarMaria Munar is a Canadian/Colombian visual artist based out of Calgary, Alberta. She graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Fine Arts with a major in Media Arts from the Alberta University of the Arts 2017. She has exhibited at Banff Center for Arts and Creativity, Gibson Fine Arts, Arts Commons, and Marion Nicoll Gallery in Alberta. She has been the recipient of a Visual Arts and New Media Individual Project grant from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, and has attended residencies Arts Commons and AU arts. She is currently working as a Senior Studio Artist at Critical Mass.
Maria's garden titled Naturaleza Muerta, consists of a series of sculptural collages that builds upon and abstracts the still-life genre, in which a fleeting moment of life is preserved and transformed. Nature has been digitized, broken down, cut up, and buried under many Photoshop layers. These fragments are like seeds, and something special happens when they sprout from her Epson printer. Vibrant and organically formed layers of photographs are meticulously cut, layered, and intertwined to create her own garden of death-defying still-life collages.

Each composition individually gathers memories of domesticated nature mixed with exotic biodiversity, exploring Maria's blended culture as a Canadian and Colombian to preserve imaginative reflections of synergy in her experiences.
