Join us for the artist reception on Friday, September 13, from 6–9 PM, with an artist talk at 7 PM.
Photographed over three years in the bedrooms and forests of French châteaux, where we surrender is a meditative series of in-camera double exposures that explore softness, memory, and the human need to let go. Inspired by Mary Oliver’s Wild Geese—and the line, “You only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves”—Johnston pairs the tender disarray of unmade beds with the wildness of surrounding landscapes. Each composition becomes a call to yield: to sleep, to feel, to return to ourselves.
