"Compiling an exhibition of this size invariably includes at least one painting that speaks to me of my upbringing...although on the farm I was more likely to have a garden trowel and a bucket for picking raspberries in my hand. Pitchforks were mostly for digging potatoes, but if you were my uncle I recall he just got down on his hands and knees and dug in the earth after gently loosening the the soil with the fork. I haven’t painted that yet, but I can still smell the earth, and see the potatoes emerge and his hands wipe away the dirt. Honest labour, the humble potato , and my auntie waiting to get them into the pot. There’d be trouble to tarry...family supper about to begin."
