Jessamyn Box
Calgary based artist Jessamyn Box employs a plethora of mixed media, dynamic colour and magical movement to create extraordinary, abstract tableaus that invite viewers into a reverie of unbridled fancy.
Utilizing acrylic, ink, crayon and charcoal Box draws out an ethereal fairy tale in a non-figurative arrangement of light, shade, and contrast, creating playful and concrete images. These seemingly subterranean and other worldly visuals are at once oddly romantic and fantastically modern, combining dreamy visual layers with lively line and form.
Viewers of Box’s works are drawn into a wistful petri dish of story and hue; a glimpse into an enchanted and uniquely artistic domain. Busy yet solemn, the artist’s work provides the sense that there is a great deal going on within each scene, with a hint toward more just beyond the frame. These vibrant, multi-faceted and highly whimsical extracts are a testament to Box’s unique sense of playfulness and boundless talent for unobtrusive storytelling.

Born in Edmonton Alberta, Vancouver based artist Jessamyn Box uses acrylic paint, marker, crayon, charcoal and ink to create large, abstract works of art that are grounded in colour and explore the relationship and territory between objects and form. Her work is a multifarious, dynamic fairy tale that forces the journey’s plot and resolution into the eye of the viewer. Box began her artistic journey as a student of the Waldorf school in Edmonton. Here at a very young age art was paramount to education, and no one told her to ‘draw inside’ the lines. Moving to Vancouver and participating in painting workshops at Emily Carr University of Art and Design was the tipping point, helping to solidify the decision to make painting and mark making a reality. Now years later, Box creates large, abstract works of art that have been shown in galleries in Vancouver and Vancouver Island, Winnipeg, Portland, Brooklyn, and Los Angeles.
