Sheila Kernan: On the Edge of It

5 - 26 November 2010

Sheila Kernan's latest works pay tribute to contrasts she has experienced in her travels. Kernan continues to show an affinity for intense, vibrant colour and in this collection she has used that colour to capture the electric sensation of activity defining the cities she has referenced, including Calgary, New York, San Francisco and Toronto. Fresh from a trip to Brazil, Kernan conveys her fascination with urban contexts: "Blending together old and new structures in combination with different places I create my own new cities. The formation of modern cities around historic buildings entrances me. Juxtaposition of carefully maintained and restored historic buildings with modern high-rises not only teaches us about the imperative of preservation but provides abundant visual interest and tells us stories."
