Donovan Rose

I (Donovan) began a dedicated painting practice after moving from Vancouver to Montreal in 2010. Currently living and working in the Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island, with my amazing wife, Barclay. Together we run The Ou Artist Residency and Pelago Footwear LTD.

But what is this work all about?

I paint what’s available to me and I tend to work in series. Some series will span several years with careful thought and consideration going into each image, and sometimes it can just be 10 unplanned paintings which are a vehicle to get me from one idea to another. I do anticipate aspects of my current interests to show up and develop throughout my work, until my senility, then I will start into abstracts.

I often create my own narrative for the images while I’m working on them, like a movie script, though I do not feel that a painting will speak the same language to every viewer and sometimes it’s better to watch without the subtitles.
